Tasting Notes

The Pact 2019 lives up to Faust legend with beautiful dark blueberry and blackberry aromas over layers of crushed rock minerality, haunting forest notes and hints of violet. With the texture of velvet—luxuriously dense—the palate wraps that core of blue and back fruit with the barest edge of bright cherry spiced with star anise and savory dried tarragon. Silky tannins and generous ripe fruit linger through an endless, vibrant finish. There’s a long life ahead for this Cabernet.

The Coombsville AVA is Napa Valley’s southernmost growing region for Cabernet Sauvignon, and our estate was among its first vineyards planted in 1998. Nestled into the rocky ruins of an ancient caldera, volcanic soils and marine breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay combine to offer polish and structure alongside consistent Napa ripeness. It is a special corner of Napa that allows us to fully express the land as we continue to pursue our craft of perfecting a modern classic.

Vineyard & Varietal Information

Both the newest in Napa Valley and the furthest south, Coombsville benefits from ancient volcanic soils, marine breezes coming off the nearby San Pablo Bay, as well as a long and cool growing season due to its location in the valley.

Located just east of the town of Napa, close to the bay, Coombsville is a physically cooler region. In the early days, many thought it was too cold to grow cabernet there, considering it to be primarily chardonnay country, but some visionaries planted anyway. Besides being the latest-to-ripen vines in Napa, the soil profiles are very different given it’s closer to the Vaca Mountain range, so there is a lot of eroded volcanic soil, which means, lots of minerals in the soil.

Wine Spectator

Leads with a bright savory edge, followed quickly by a wave of dark fig, blackberry and açaí berry flavors. Subtle alder and chaparral notes add nice lift through the finish. Best from 2023.

Wine Advocate

Scents of charred wood and scorched coffee mark the nose of Faust's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon The Pact. Those elements are backed by notes of plum, cassis and blackberries. It's full-bodied and dark-fruited, but there's still a sense of freshness here, expressed in part as a vibrant, mouthwatering finish with soft tannins.

James Suckling

Redcurrants and blackcurrants with some violets and crushed earth. Full-bodied with round, creamy tannins. Fine, velvety tannins that are open and grounded. Firm and tight finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2024.
